Brazil has made it easier for many foreign nationals to obtain temporary visas without visiting a Brazilian consulate or surrendering their passports.
Since September 1, 2026, citizens of countries exempt from Brazil’s visitor-visa requirement can receive temporary visas electronically. The change covers several categories, including work, family reunion and digital nomad visas.
Eligible applicants can submit the application and supporting documents through Brazil’s online consular application system. Once approved, the electronic visa is sent to the email address provided during the application.
The new process eliminates the need to:
- Deliver a passport to a Brazilian consulate
- Submit original documents in person
- Leave the passport at the consulate during processing
- Return to collect the passport after approval
Applicants should print the electronic visa and carry it when traveling to Brazil.
Who Qualifies?
The change applies only to citizens of countries that normally do not need a visitor visa for short trips to Brazil. Travelers can check their nationality using Brazil’s official visa-requirement chart.
Document requirements have not changed. Depending on the visa category, applicants may still need police certificates, proof of income or employment, apostilled documents, official translations and payment of consular fees.
Those applying for a work visa must also complete the appropriate residence-authorization process. In most cases, the employer in Brazil must obtain authorization before the electronic visa can be issued.
Temporary visa holders may still be required to register with Brazil’s Federal Police after arriving in the country.
