LATAM Airlines Charts Bold Expansion: Brazil → Middle East & Africa

LATAM Airlines, Latin America’s largest airline group, is taking a bold step in expanding its international reach — with plans to launch new routes linking Brazil to the Middle East and Africa. The announcement signals the airline’s ambition to make São Paulo and Brazil even stronger global travel hubs, offering new options for both leisure and business travelers.

A New Phase of International Growth

According to LATAM executives, the company is conducting feasibility studies for new long-haul destinations from Brazil to the Middle East and Africa, regions that currently have no direct connections with South America. This move is part of a wider plan to increase international capacity by 6% between August 2025 and August 2026.

The airline is also ramping up existing intercontinental services from São Paulo/Guarulhos:

  • Rome: daily flights beginning June 2026.

  • Barcelona: five weekly flights in April, increasing to daily in June.

  • Madrid: 14 weekly flights from April 2026.

  • Orlando: two daily flights starting June 2026.

  • Los Angeles: five weekly flights.

  • Miami: 15 weekly flights.

  • Boston: four weekly flights starting May 2026.

These additions will make LATAM one of the most globally connected airlines operating from Brazil.

Why the Middle East and Africa?

Direct flights from Brazil to Africa and the Middle East have long been limited, with most passengers connecting via Europe or the United States. By establishing new nonstop routes, LATAM aims to capture growing demand for travel, trade, and cultural exchange between these regions.

Potential destinations could include major global hubs such as Doha, Dubai, Johannesburg, or Addis Ababa, allowing travelers from South America to connect more efficiently with Africa, Asia, and the Gulf region.

For Brazil, this would represent a significant leap forward in connectivity — strengthening tourism, commerce, and even diplomatic ties with new regions of the world.

Strengthening LATAM’s Global Position

This expansion comes at a time of recovery and renewed confidence for LATAM after its restructuring. The airline continues to modernize its fleet, adding next-generation aircraft such as the Airbus A321neo and Embraer E195-E2, improving both fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.

By adding new long-haul routes, LATAM aims to position itself as South America’s bridge to the world — competing more directly with European and Middle Eastern carriers that currently dominate long-distance connections to and from the continent.

What It Means for Travelers

For passengers, the benefits are clear:

  • Shorter travel times between Brazil, Africa, and the Middle East.

  • More competitive fares as LATAM enters markets previously monopolized by foreign carriers.

  • Increased convenience for travelers continuing beyond to Asia or southern Africa.

As LATAM prepares to finalize its route studies, travelers can expect formal announcements in the coming months — possibly before mid-2026.
